Mango and Kidneys: Delicious Fruit or Silent Danger
Kidney patients need a carefully considered diet, especially regarding foods rich in potassium and salts, to avoid kidney strain.
Mangoes, despite their delicious taste, are high in potassium, which may pose a problem for patients with advanced kidney disease.
Moderation is the golden rule. Some mango varieties contain less potassium, making them safer.
The problem is that diseased kidneys don't regulate potassium levels efficiently, leading to its accumulation in the blood. This can also be caused by some medications.
Therefore, kidney patients are advised to limit their intake of potassium-rich fruits such as bananas, oranges, watermelon, tomatoes, and dried peaches, and replace them with low-potassium options such as apples, grapes, strawberries, and canned pears.
Drinks such as canned fruit juices and iced tea are not suitable for kidney patients, while water and fresh fruits, which are low in potassium, are safer options.
